The door to the sickroom was of course, closed. Gaell tapped hesitantly on the door. The chit was supposed to be in total isolation, and the good doctor probably wouldn't appreciate his appearin' there without what you'd call a prop'r invite. There was no answer from within.
"Comeon you old sawbones, open up," he called. "I got someone to see ya." Damn doctors, so sure they were 'bove the rest of em.
Impatiently, he hammered on the door, then - without out waiting - hoisted the girl over his shoulder and used the free hand to throw the door open.
What he saw there made his mouth drop open in surporise. The toff girl was there all right, moanin like a bedlamite, but on the floor next to her lay another one.
"What in bloody 'hell is goin' on!" he bellowed.
His call brought the doctor running. The man - probably too young to be much good he figured - went pale when he saw the second girl and began to mutter something in some Goddamn foreign language. Goddamnit, he's a goddamned Frenchie thought Gaell in disgust
"Whar kindof setup are you runnin' here?" thundered Gael.
The frenchie ignored him (and the girl from above the deck) and knelt down by the the girl on the floor, bursting into to tears like a woman.

Gwen's eyes jerked open. She was feeling oddly light. She turned in her bed and came to face Lydia who was standing near her bed.
"Are you feeling better ?" she croaked.
"Yes. Still a bit of a headhache, but I'm really better"
"Good"
The Frenchwoman smiled. It had worked ! She had not lost her healing abilities ! She was to stand up, when a steady hand stopped her.
"Où penses-tu aller ?" asked Damien, a little coolly.
"Je vais continuer mon travail" replied Gwen, a little annoyed.
"C'est hors de question !" cried Damien, loosing his temper. "J'ai un cas d'empoisonnement et je n'ai pas le temps de te surveiller !"
Gwenaëlle narrowed her eyes in anger. She couldn't believe Damien dared to speak to her this way.
"Tu devrais me remercier ! Lydia va mieux !"
Damien looked at her and said, pointing at the triskel.
"Je sais ce que tu as fait, sorcière !"
Gwen opened her mouth to answer, but she found nothing to say. She grabbed her stuff and exited the room, shooting the door behind her. She needed to calm down.
The vision of the ship was still in her mind but she pushed it away. He had called her "sorcière" and it hurted more than anything. Once on the deck, she let her tears run freely on her cheeks.
********************************
translations : "Où penses-tu aller ?" : where do you think you're going ?
"Je vais continuer mon travail" : I have to go on my task
"C'est hors de question !" : No way !
"J'ai un cas d'empoisonnement et je n'ai pas le temps de te surveiller !" : I have got a poisonned girl and I've no time left to look after you !
"Tu devrais me remercier ! Lydia va mieux !" : you should thank me ! Lydia's better !
"Je sais ce que tu as fait, sorcière !" : I know what you've done, you witch !

Aimèe and Jack wrested with the monkey throughout all of the commotion. Eventually a rather puzzled Aimèe spoke. "Erm... Jack?"
Jack pull the monkey off his hair and looked at her. "Yes?"
"Not that I mind or anything but.... some random guy has just walked onto your ship and had a fight with a young girl, some girl I've never seen before appeared from nowhere and fainted on deck and that French girl just run our of there crying her eyes out and muttering some...French. And you just stand here with my playing with a monkey. I don't get it."
"Neither do I." Jack looked puzzled. "What d'ye want me t'do Aimèe? Stop th'fight? Sort out th'water? Be the good cap'n an' make the French girl feel better?"
Aimèe nodded.
"Wrong!" Jack laughed. "That's not me job!"
"Then what is your job Captain?"
"Right now it is to stand here with you and play with th'monkey. After all, I only be the cap'n..."

"Kira! Are you ok?" Asked Susanna in the cabin "No" Kira grunted angrily "He's come here and ruined it all." Susanna knew who Kira was reffering to by 'him'. She had seen the start of the fight, but had preffered to stay out of the way. "I see, I'll leave you alone"replied Susanna When Susanna got to the deck it was nearly deserted, Milla was gone from the crows nest, and Gaell had gone too, a drunken pirate or two walked by, but nobody else.

That night, Ana looked on as Jose and Jack busied themselves setting the course towards the New World, as indicated in De Soto's Map; supposedly showing the way to El Dorado, and Ana hoped, that they would encounter her people on the way, she was determined to uncover the mystery of the other map they found.
After everything was set and before heading down to her quarters, she checked on Lydia, she seemed to be a lot better, and was resting. Ana nodded towards Damien who seemed quite on edge.
"Is she alright?"
The doctor remained silent, and mumbled something inaudible in French. Hmm wonder what got his pants in a bunch. Ana thought to herself and left. Kira was nowhere to be found and everyone else seemed to be sleeping. Or so Ana thought.
She went to her quarters, still thinking about the discussion she had with Jose about her being his squire. Jose has explained a great deal about it, but it still seemed quite foreign to her. As she pondered over his words again, she realized there was a hopeful tone in Jose's voice as he said the words. Poor Jose, all alone aboard this ship, without a family, without anyone to watch his back, without anyone to trust! Ana felt a renewed vigor through her, I can be a damn good squire!
Suddenly Emil came walking in.
"Emil! Do you think I can be a good squire?" she asked him.
"You? A squire?" Emil started to laugh uncontrollably.
Ana frowned. "You don't know anything about squires! Oh wait, I'm a woman, would that make me a squire-rita?"
Emil laughed even harder.
Ana ignored Emil, it doesn't sound so bad, hmm comrades! It sounded pretty good, as long as Jose doesn't try to order her around or anything. Ana looked over to Emil who now was lying down on his make-shift bed.
"Hey you can be Jose's squire too! Think about it Emil, we can be Dons!"
"Keep on dreaming Ana." he mumbled and as he was drifting to sleep...hmm Don Emil Boudvere! Doesn't sound bad, he thought to himself with a chuckle.

"I will put ye down, faire maid ..... if ye promise to follow me to the galley. Methinks you need some stew or something to eat. " said Gaell. He then gently lowered Milla and lead her to the Galley. All the while, he thought of his daughter - and lamented what had happened between them.

"That might be a good idea. The doc' looks as if 'es got 'is 'ands full"
Milla said jerking her head in the direction of the doctor but then regretting doing so as her head started spinning again. Making her way slowly out of the infirmary she followed Gael as best she could, oftne using the wooden walls for support.
"I haven't 'ad anything to eat in th' past few days. That and I don't think that 'orrible tastin' water didn't do meh any good"

Six days had passed since George the Blade and his men had made an alliance with Captain Carlita and her crew. They were lucky, for the mysterious female captain had picked up the trail of the Pearl by the very next day. She was obviously adept at what she did. And so, now it was that almost a week later, the two allied pirate ships had kept pace with the Pearl. Never enough to fully gain on them, but just enough to stay within the faintest of telescope's sight of it. Neither captain wanted those onboard the Pearl being tipped off to their pressence just yet. They could gain ground when the time was ripe.
Thus it was that The Queen of the Sea was inching ever closer to the southern coast of the North America. Last siting and estimation put them to within a day of New Orleans, the best port on the Gulf. "But will Jack land there," wondered George to himself. "Its French territory, and pirates will be wanted there just as much as in English territory. Maybe even more so. If Jack lands, will we land? Supplies are short, so I'd be willing to risk it. What the devil is he heading for the mainland anyway? And what is Carlita wanting to do?"
George was just about to signal to the nearby ship for a conferrence, when a sudden storm rose up out of the ocean. Lightning, thunder, fog, heavy winds, and high waves. Utter chaos. The doom of many a ship on the open seas.
But George and his men, despite their drunken pirate ways, were a worthy crew when it came to the workings of a ship. With great skill, brute strength, and pure determination, they were able to ride out the storm and keep their ship afloat. About forty-five minutes worth of struggle between Man and Nature. And when the fog had cleared, Carlita's ship was nowhere to be seen.... **********************
Further to the west and north, The Pearl and her crew had escaped the wrath of the storm. However, the fog came upon them like never before. Visibility was only about five feet in front of a person either way. Staying up in the crows nest hoping to sight anything was a vain effort. Using caution, Jack ordered that the majority of the sails be drawn in; there was no sense in crashing into anything in the fog, and so this would give them more reaction time with reduced speed.
All hands were on deck, and nothing could be seen. Only the extremely wounded or sick and those who tended them were down below. Everyone was on alert, keeping their eyes open for the sudden appearance of land, or shoals, or whatever else.
And so, Jose found himself leaning against the starboard rail with Gabby, Ana, and Emil standing nearby. While the others strained their eyes, Jose strained his ears. Ignoring all else, the sounds of the sea came to him. And shortly but surely, something else did. Jose backed up in somewhat of a surprise. "What is it," asked Emil.
"There are voices on the air," whispered Jose. "Yelling, fell, hoarse voices. Evil is afoot!"
"I hear nothing," proclaimed Emil.
"Jack," yelled Jose. "Something is nigh us on the starboard side!"
Jack and almost the entire crew (small though it was) came running over. He peered out, trying to spy whatever it was. Jack the Monkey sat perched upon his shoulder, picked something out of the sea dog's hair, and ate it. There were moments of tense silence. Even Jose's voices seemed to have died down. Everyone's heart beat that much faster. "We must do something," whispered the Spaniard.
"But what," inquired Emil. "I didn't hear anything then, and I don't hear anything now!"
"I believe you," said Ana. "I will follow you in whatever you do, my knight."
"As will I," agreed Gabby.
With that, Jose rushed below deck to the canons. Ana and Gabby followed immediately. Emil did slowly, and the rest of the crew merely waited. Working quickly, the four managed to load four canons, two at a time. Torches nearby, Jose and Gabby manned one, and Emil and Ana another. They all peered out of their canon hatches, listened, waited, and gulped.
Just then, the ship lurched upwards, riding the edge of a high and powerful wave. And just below them, Jose saw something as it approached to within ten feet. A ship! It was not riding the same wave, and so was below them. Still, with the fog, it was rather dim in appearance. But Jose caught something very definate as their wave subsided, and the Pearl began to sink to a normal height--a pirate flag. A crimson red one, with a black skull in the middle, and a black serpent half wrapped about the skull. Jose's eyes widened like never before, and he lurched a bit backwards.
"What is it," asked Ana and Gabby at the same time.
"FIRE," was Jose's only response. The two canons went off simultaneously. And the other loaded two were fired seconds later. The four companions reeled to load further canons. Yet, Jose couldn't even see the ship anymore. They were shooting blind. Still, canonfire responded, and tore at The Pearl herself. The shots were not well-aimed given the fog. Jose and the others got off two more shots. Three more responded, and then there was nothing.
The fog lifted, and nothing could be seen in the evening twillight. Jack rushed down to the canonry level to see what was amiss. He got no answers from Jose. The Spaniard merely sat by his canon window, breathing heavily.
"Well, Jack," explained Emil. "There was obviously a ship out there. Hence the canonballs that came at us."
Gabby and Ana put comforting hands on Jose's shoulders. "Its ok, Knight Jose," said Ana. "Its gone, whatever it was.
Jose barely registered the fact that Ana had referred to him as a knight. She was taking to the idea of her being a squire, and that made Jose happy. But he would think of that later. For now, all he could think of was the ship that was out there somewhere.
"What was it," asked Gabby. "What did you see?"
Jose answered slowly and quietly, "I saw...a ghost."

The crew of The Pearl was out and about early the next day, all eager to make port in New Orleans. It would be dangerous, and they'd have to be as secretive as possible, but it would be worth it. Supplies, arms, fresh drink, and land were all to be had there. If everything went correctly, Jack assumed they'd reach New Orleans a few hours before sundown.
With the incident of the night before, The Pearl had indeed been hit by canon balls. Only two of them and not direct hits given the almost non-existant visibility. A few dents and cracking timbers here and there. So, the majority of the crew were set at making repairs.
Jose was not. He stared off into space much like he had the night before. Only this time there was no fog. Yet, he could still see almost nothing. The mystery ship, sailing out of the dark waters of his haunted past was nowhere to be seen. In some ways, Jose had hoped he'd never see that ship again. His reasoning for not actively looking for it was that he didn't know it was still afloat. For all he knew, it could have sunk or been captured by the authorities since the time it had raided Cartenega and taken all of his dreams with it. But now he had proof that it and its crew were still well and alive. And that demanded action....
The fair voice of Gabby brought Jose out of his deep thoughts. "Jose," she said. "You offered to train me in the ways of the sword. Can you now? The ship is being repaired by the crew, and there is plenty of time before we're needed elsewhere."
The Spaniard smiled. This would be a healthy distraction; vengeance could come later. Plus, there was nothing worthwhile left to him other than Gabby. She was a Godsend to him. "Very well," he said.
The two stood in the middle of the deck. Gabby drew her sword. Standing sometimes next to and sometimes behind her, Jose showed her how to properly hold and handle her sword, and some good offensive and defensive stances. Walking away, he drew his own sword, and showed her several moves, feints, and parries. Gabby then imitated them as best she could.
"Very good," praised Jose. "Now lets see how you fare against a live opponent!" He took two mop handles, and gave one to Gabby. He bowed to her, and then charged. Taken by surprise, Gabby gasped, took a step backwards, and parried the oncoming blow. "Good," said Jose. "Now attack me!" He retreated, and Gabby came at him.
The clatter of the practicing swords could be heard all throughout the ship. It disturbed Jack as he sat near the wheel with Aimee and Jack the Monkey. That his precious Pearl had been hit the night before and that he had not been able to do anything about the unseen enemy had quite upset the Captain. So much so, that he hadn't slept a wink since then, and had been drinking rum the entire time. He had a bottle of it in his hand right now, as a matter of fact. Aimee and the Monkey had tried several times to sneak a swig of the rum from Jack, but to no avail. So while Jack prattled nonsense, Aimee sat with her back against the ship and her arms folded across her chest. She sighed with bored disgust. Jack the Monkey imitated her, and sat next to her with arms folded. He let out a little monkey sigh. He wanted some rum!
Amongst all the gibberish Jack was talking about, he finally came on to something that Aimee could make out (only she wasn't paying much attention). "You see that out there," said Jack as he pointed behind the ship.
"No," said Aimee without even attempting to look.
"Well I do," continued Jack. "And that is what we sailors like to call...a mermaid! Such lovely creatures. Some say they are evil and lure sailors to their deaths upon the rocks. But I've seen mermaids countless of times, savvy. And they're nothing but fun! Long, silken hair.... Rosie cheeks and oh so red lips.... Beautiful curved form.... And the most wonderful...."
"You're drunk, dad," interrupted Aimee. "There can't be anything out there." She still did not bother to look.
"Oh, I'm drunk alright," continued Jack. "But that doesn't mean I don't know a mermaid when I see one, ok? Look at her swim so fast. She's coming to give me a kiss!" Aimee rolled her eyes; she could not believe how soused and out of it her dad was.
There was a sudden plop on the wood of the ship. Out of the corner of her eye, Aimee noticed Jack lurching closer to the very back of the rail. She heard him say, "Oh, lassy! I looove you!!"
Aimee finally looked to her father to see what he was doing. Jack had his 'mermaid' in his arms as it perched upon the rail of the ship, and he was kissing it rather passionately. Aimee's eyes widened when she saw what her father was doing. That was no mermaid! It was the giant tentacle of some great sea beast. Several other tentacles lapped up on to the rail and deck of the back part of the ship. And there was Jack getting fresh with one!
Aimee let out a loud, deafening, and fearful scream.

Calen's head snapped up at the sound of Amiees scream , bringing her out of a trance .She shook her head wondering if she had imagened it but the sound came again, a high pitched fearful scream causing Calen to sprint in it's direction.Calen found Amiee staring in horror at Jack, her back pressed against the side of the ship.
"Amiee whats wrong?"
Amiee just pointed wordlessly at Jack so Calen turned to face him . As soon as she did her jaw almost hit the floor
"What the hell....?" she trailed off
Calen came to her sences and pushed Amiee in the opposite direction of the creature , she drew her sword and called for help.
"WILL! ANA!! GIBBS! GET UP HERE!!"

Ana was awakened from her restless sleep by Calen's screams, she was tired and exhausted the night before and had tried to catch a few winks before harboring in New Orleans.
She saw Emil already scrambling to his feet from his makeshift bed and went up on deck. Wonder what is it now? Ana leaped to her feet and fetched her cutlass, she had expected the pirates or whoever who had attacked them last night; were attacking them again, but she was shocked when she finally got up on deck to see that Jack was strangled by a huge, and slimy tentacle, and it was on the verge of toppling him overboard.
"What in the name of God, is that thing?" said Gibbs joining by her side. "I don't know." she replied. "We have to free Jack before he becomes its next meal, I'll take the left, you go right!"
Ana rushed to the left where Calen and Emil were already hacking away at the huge arm.

Susanna, who was practising her swordwork, heard the screams and glanced up and saw a what looked like a giant octopus's tentacle, it was strangling Jack, and Aimèe looked petrified, and ad only just stopped screaming. Even Susanna, who was great at staying calm in situations like this was a bit scared. She thought the best thing to do was lead Aimèe below deck. She ran up to Aimèe, whispered in her ear, and they both ran quickly into the cabin, on thier way stamping hard on a stray tetacle.

Lydia stood up. The effort had taken her several minutes, and when she'd stood she had to clutch at the bedframe to keep herself from falling over. Her eyes focussed on her hands, holding her so determinedly upright.
They were pale, so pale. The veins stood out, a web of blue against the white of her skin. She had spent her whole life indoors, trying to banish any evidence of sun on her face. She had never forgiven herself for the time she had forgotten her parasol at Christian Acker' s party and had been stuck with freckles for the rest of the summer.
But she had never been this pale. Or this thin. Her hand was so slender the bones might as well have been visible through the flesh. It sickened her, and yet she felt no desire to eat. The very thought of food made her stomach churn with unease, even though she could not remember the last time she had eaten anything.
Her legs gave out, and she fell, striking her head against the bedframe as she did so. Shaking she put a hand to her head and gasped when it came away wet with blood. Yet she did not even have the energy to call for help. She lay where she had fallen and cried until exhaustion lulled her to sleep.
