Not the most original story line in the world, it will be interesting to see if Bloom can pull this off. If he can, it will be a frellin' awsome movie though.

Does anyone know if this is an actual story/history? And when / which time period does this takes place?

I assume that this is not based off of something, if so then basically every medivial movie that I would have ever seen would have been relatively true, nah, probally just Hollywood romantasizing again.
Well, I was snooping around and here are the tidbits that I found. ************ Ridley Scott's next project is the historical epic Kingdom of Heaven, which will take place in the 12th century. The story will focus on a young blacksmith (possibly Orlando Bloom) who helps defend Jerusalem against the Crusaders. *******source, movies.go********** ******************** Orlando Bloom is in talks to take the lead role in Ridley Scott's new epic Kingdom of Heaven.
The drama, written by William Monahan, will begin shooting in Morocco in January.
Set in the 12th century, it focuses on a young blacksmith who becomes a knight and helps defend Jerusalem against the Crusaders.
The film will carry a budget of more than £60 million, according to Variety.com. *********source Ananova************ ************************ Orlando Bloom is to star in Ridley Scott's epic 12th century love story The Kingdom Of Heaven.
Scott says Kingdom will be staged on an even greater scale than Gladiator.
Shooting begins in Morocco early next year, reports Teletext.
Bloom plays a young peasant who becomes a knight of the crusades and falls in love with the princess of Jerusalem.
The film will be the second collaboration between Bloom and director Scott, who cast the then-unknown actor in his 2001 war flick Black Hawk Down ************************* is being wooed by Ridley Scott to star in Crusades epic "Kingdom of Heaven" - which has just received the greenlight.
If up for it, he'll play a 12th-century blacksmith who becomes a knight, falls in love with a princess and, according to Variety, "helps defend Jerusalem against the Crusaders". Eh?
Reel Life smells some historically suspect writing, cos unless Bloom's blacking up for the role (which wouldn't surprise us in the slightest), he'll be an Anglo-Saxon swordswinger fighting for a Muslim power.
If we remember our copy of "12th Century History for Idiots" correctly, such characters would actually have fought for the 'Christian' crusades. Still, hard to imagine Hollywood actually casting an Arab character as hero (heaven forfend).
Shooting on the $100+ pic will start in Morocco in January, from a script by William Monahan, the writer of Scott's delayed Russell Crowe project, "Tripoli". ************source BBC*********
Hmm, well, all of these seem to be a bit conflicting with each other eh? Well, it seems a bit to early to tell the exacts of it, personally, I think BBC got the clearest pic of what I am afraid it is going to turn out like.

Yes, quite conflicting and confusing, so he's defending Jerusalem against the crusaders, but then becomes a knight? Eh? And just for the record he doesnt look Arabic. *must wait for more info then* And what's with the whole blacksmith thing, it's like potc all over again.
But of course, it sounds very interesting, and Bloom is in it, so it's a plus. I'm looking forward to see how this movie will progress.

Okay Summer hears the deal, as I am sure you are aware of, the Crusades or the 'Holy Wars' were a series of wars waged by the Christians from Medeivial (it would really help if I could learn to spell) Europe against Jerusalem which was occupied by Muslims at the time. It seems that Bloom takes the side of the Muslims and helps defend Jerusalem, namely because of the Jerusalem princess (whoever she is going to be). Yadda yadda yadda, as I am sure you are aware, Muslims are commenly dark skinned (hence the dark skinned comment) so if Bloom is going to be defending Jerusalem, it is unheard of for a white skinned Chatholic man to be on thier side, that simply wasn't how it worked in history (becase the Crusades were an integral part of history).
Another thing that grieves me is the conflicting view point of Bloom playing either a blacksmith or a peasant (though I suppose he could be both, but typically a peasent is nought but a poor farmer type person, blacksmith's aren't generally classified as peasent). Anyhoo, as you stated above, the tagline is 'peasent becomes a knight'. I mean, HELLOOOOOO? It's not like we have never seen that one before. It has been done so many times it is about smashed into the ground, trampled upon, spit upon, and stepped upon. It is the classic Hollywood scenerio. You want to know the worst of it, THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN (ahem, must calm down). Generally in the Middle Ages of Europe during that time, the social and class structures were very very strict. It was practically unheard of for a poor person to be able to move up the class structure like that (ask Tanc if you want to know more about that, I am sure he knows more than I do).
Well, apart from the obvious fact that I desperatly hope that Hollywood doesn't bill this as a 'historic film', it sounds good, entertainment wise of course. ;D
Alright, I am done ranting and raving for now

OK, is it just me, or is this turning out to be just another A Knight's Tale? But then again, it could turn into a Gladiator and Orlando could go up for an Oscar!!! I prefer the second one. Well, what did you guys expect? If a movie is to become a Hollywood blockbuster, it's got to either be hilariously funny, super intense and dramatic, or a total copy of previous films. Honestly, poor guy becomes valiant hero, blah blah, equals Hollywood smash.

Some interesting news I found on the OrlandoBloomFiles ********************* "It's a movie I've been thinking about for 20 years," he said recently on the Matchstick Men junket. "It's going to take place in the middle of the Crusades, around 1130, 1136, and feature Saladin, a Muslim, who was the wisest of all the knights, a trustworthy man of his word. He kept the peace around Jerusalem, which was held by Baldwin, a Christian who believed that any religion should be able to come to the city and pray. The two men had a connection of respect. I don't want the movie to be about knights in armor and chaps charging around with red crosses and waving swords and hacking off heads. It really should be a fundamental discussion between the two religions and not only that, but the actual misrepresentation of the Holy Roman Empire by the Catholic church, which was in those times seriously corrupt. When they got down there, the people the church regarded as infidels had a faith that was as strong, if not stronger than the fundamental rules of Christianity." ********************* Well, it will be interesting to see if Hollywood can pull this off. It sounds a bit preachy to me. One question, why is there no mention of JEWS in Jerusalem. In that time period, there were Muslim's living there true. But there were also Jews. How are they going to feature in this movie.
