Essay : Of Halloween and Psychotic un-Dead Killers on the Rampage
Leatherface, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers; these are just some of the names synonymous with the slash-and-kill-all-the-beautiful-young-nubile-teens-cos-I'm-so-tragically-disfigured genre. (Unless you count that insignificant movie about something some teenagers did last summer, but that's besides the point) What I find particularly interesting is how convenient it is for moviemakers to slap a mental disorder on their products and come up with a money churning legacy that would probably last until someone comes up with a better disorder. Oh wait, that already happened. Identity anyone? Back to the matter at hand, my cousin BeeBee and I, came up with a question. Why do we, in spite of ourselves, watch these movies? Other than providing short lived cheap thrills and total lack of substance, quite similar to all of Kelly Osbourne's songs; they offer little more than predictibility and some ol'skool run for-your-life-but-one-survived-to-tell-the tale routine.
And so, we came up with an answer, quite an easy and obvious one of course, we humans (and maybe some highly intelligent primates), like to be frightened, yes folks, the horrible naked, sometimes dirty truth. Think about it, we would actually part with our hard earned money (unless you're a model, or one of the Douglases) just to be frightened. I am one of these suckers, maybe it's a psychological thing, or maybe we are all just sick of our boring dreary lives that we'd actually want to experience chaos, mayhem, and absolute hell, but of course from the comforts of our very own homes; where it's safe and warm, and no actual chainsaw wielding psycopaths about. So who cares if the movie is as predictable as Michael Jackson's dance moves, or the plot as cheesy as Demi Moore's final attempt on getting back on the A list, we all love a good scare now and then. Trick or treat!
